3 hybrid tea roses (unknown cultivar…) in a garden in Albany, CA near the photographer’s house. Taken by a Nikon N75 with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm ƒ3.5 AI lens on Fuji Superia 400. Exposure unrecorded, it was by guesstimate… (this lens doesn’t meter on this camera…) Negative scanned into computer by an HP G4010

Jatropha hybrid – Stem (110 DAS)

Interspecific hybrid (Jatropha scaposa x Jatropha curcas). At 110 days after sowing, only the basal part of the stem is woody (like in J. curcas) and very thick, unlike any of the parents. The other part of the stem stays green and herbaceous, like in J. scaposa. The petioles are thick, like in J. scaposa. The stem is single, unbranched, like in J. scaposa and unlike J. curcas where 1 up to 3 branches arise from the axils of the cotyledonary leaves and the first real leaf.

Interspecific hybrid (Jatropha scaposa x Jatropha curcas), 116 days after sowing. Leaves are huge, like in J. scaposa, and obtain a leaf width of up to 43 cm at 116 days after sowing.

Interspecific hybrid (Jatropha scaposa x Jatropha curcas). At 129 days after sowing, the hybrid plant has a terminal inflorescence, and just starts to form lateral branches just below the inflorescence. The tall (140 cm) mainly herbaceous stem is too weak to support the weight of the plant, so it had to be supported with a stick. Leaf blades are huge, up to 40 cm wide and 29 cm long.
